When we initially moved to France I think it’s safe to say I hadn’t totally taken into consideration all that would be involved in learning a new language. Instead thinking how hard could it be?!
Needless to say prior to our move it had been many years since I’ve had to study & learn a new skillset & as I’ve now found out, it’s not quite as easy as just learning a few key words/phrases, which is more than adequate when holidaying in a foreign country. Instead it involves re-learning to speak - phrases you would normally use might not necessarily translate well, so you have to adapt & of course with tenses, grammar & just the basic formation of sentences, words can appear in a totally different order to what you’re used to saying them in. Then there’s the different pronunciation of the alphabet…..I could go on but suffice to say it really is like being a baby & having to learn to speak again. Even my name Jane is pronounced differently here in France.
